Action Card Briefing -
May 2004
Thanks from Tanzania and Blessings from
Canterbury
‘Dear Friends, you in the Jubilee Debt Campaign,
have every reason to share with us (in Tanzania) satisfaction with (our)
successes, for you stood by us in demanding debt relief ... Together we
have achieved much but much remains to be done. Our solidarity and
advocacy must continue ... On to the Jubilee!!’.
H.E. Benjamin W Mkapa, President of Tanzania
In 2001 Tanzania got substantial debt relief, all
of which went into education, health, water provision and HIV/AIDS work.
Two years later a Joint Review Team reported:
gender parity in primary school enrolment;
Increase from 58% to 88% in net primary enrolment;
30,000 classrooms built; 17,800 new teachers and
15,000 teacher retrained.
At this rate Tanzania’s education Millennium
Development Goal will be reached. SO DEBT RELIEF WORKS! There just isn’t
enough of it. We need to keep the Campaign going. We need a reminder
each year - World Debt Day is May 16th.
‘I wish the Jubilee Debt Campaign every blessing
for their World Debt Day campaign’, says Archbishop Rowan Williams.
BUT the JDC is you, me and millions round the
world, like the folk on the Action card. We must keep faith with each
other, North and South. We must carry on until all the unjust debt is
cancelled. We will carry on because we know we are right.
Make your ‘CALL FOR CHANGE’. Send a card to Gordon
Brown. Tell him, just £3.00 per person for ten years will cancel the UK
share of the remaining debt. Small change for us will make a big
difference for the 42 poorest countries!
