Action Card Briefing February 2005

Oxford University’s recent scientific study into global warming has shown potentially serious results for our world in the next decades. The study predicts a rise in average global temperature of 11C, this is double the rise predicted by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the international body set up to investigate global warming. Such high temperatures would melt most of the polar icecaps and mountain glaciers, raising sea levels by more than 20ft, flooding settlements on the British coast and turning the interior into an unrecognisable tropical landscape.

The Scientist in charge of the latest study, said processing the results showed the Earth's climate is far more sensitive to increases in man-made greenhouse gases than previously realised, even present levels of greenhouse gases maintained for long periods may lead to dangerous climate change but increases would lead to a serious situation indeed.

Attempts to control global warming, based on the Kyoto treaty, concentrated on stabilising the emissions of greenhouse gases at 1990 levels, might not be enough and we need to accept that while greenhouse gas levels can increase we need to limit them, and look at ways to level them off, and then bring them back down again.

The Prime Minister, Tony Blair has put the UK Government firmly in the forefront of efforts to tackle global warming and calls on the US Government to play their part also. The USA, the world’s worst polluter has so far refused to sign the Kyoto agreement because of the impact it would have on jobs and the economy. Yet scientists assure us if emissions are reduced, greenhouse gas levels would start to fall rapidly.

For the sake of the future of our world, the environment and our childrens’ children this issue is one which we all should take seriously, whether it is to decide to walk to work or write to our MP, we can all play our part.

Please send the postcard to President Bush, urging him to take seriously the issue of climate change and to ensure his country plays its part in the global effort to reduce emissions.
