Action Card – September 2006
Racial Justice Sunday
Every year in the UK member churches of the Churches Together in Britain and
Ireland (CTBI) observe Racial Justice Sunday (RJS) on the second weekend of
September. The Churches’ Commission for Racial Justice (CCRJ) under the
auspices of CTBI produces a Racial Justice Sunday pack every year which is
offered to every church for use on this special Sunday.
RJS is an opportunity for people in the church and society to celebrate and
affirm diversity and difference as gifts of God and as sources of growth and
enrichment for humanity. It is a time to appreciate all that we can be and are
to each other. It is a time to praise Christ for teaching us that loving God
means seeing God in the ‘other’, in the one who is different, the stranger. It
is also a chance for people to become active in racial justice advocacy networks
or to reaffirm that commitment and to register through the church head offices.
It can be a time for local churches to develop or renew links with groups in
their local areas or with other churches committed to justice issues and to
ridding our societies and world of racial prejudice and discrimination.
The Racial Justice Sunday pack offer very helpful suggestions for worship
services on that Sunday, for prayers and songs/hymns, sermon outlines, readings
and a whole host of other useful resources that users can access. They are
available from all the member church offices and from CCRJ itself.
Although an annual date has been identified, churches/groups are encouraged to
observe RJS whenever it is convenient. For example, some have RJS in October
which is Black History month, others observe the day through having an event
during the week. Whatever suits the group is the starting point really.
Please send your card to the staff of the Churches’ Commission for Racial
Justice, to encourage them in the work they are doing.
