Action Card Briefing - November 2005
Friends of St. Hannah’s supports a Chaldean
Catholic-run Girls’ orphanage in Baghdad. Following 2003 events it, with
many orphanages and schools, was in a perilous state of affairs. Paul
Johns, a Methodist from Nottingham, who has worked in Bosnia on
practical Christian/Muslim reconciliation projects, was visiting Baghdad
through the instigation of Islamic Relief organisations and was taken to
see the staff and girls of St Hannah’s. Out of that visit a scheme of
support and moral encouragement came about for groups of all faiths and
none to adopt. Many groups in and around Nottingham and beyond have done
this. Now things are much better for the girls (Christian and Muslim) of
St Hannah’s, though security and the future of the Iraqi Christian
community continue to be major issues of concern. A recent UK visit by
the Chaldean Catholic Bishop of Baghdad brought these concerns home and
the overwhelming gratefulness of that community for the support shown to
date. It is only possible to get email messages of support and
encouragement to Bishop Andreas, Father Bashir (of the local supporting
Baghdad Parish Church) and Sister Daghaly (who runs the orphanage and
school). Cards can be sent to Paul Johns, who will summarize and forward
them via email to Baghdad. His contact details are:
