7. WHAT WE CAN AFFIRM

The Core Group decided to begin its recommendations on the way forward by gathering together that which could be affirmed by all. The following points are offered for reflection and possible development.

7.1 We affirm:

  • that our identity as human beings lies in our creation by God;

  • that we depend upon God and upon one another and that each person has particular abilities, qualities and gifts to contribute to the whole community;

  • that our unity as the redeemed community lies in our new creation in Jesus Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit;

  • and that this is marked by mutual trust;

  • that God has created us to live in community, whether we are married or single;

  • that God has given us the gifts of friendship, and the lifelong, mutual commitment of marriage;

  • that honesty, integrity and faithfulness should characterise all our relationships;

  • and that exploitation of other people is always wrong;

  • that holiness is a gift of God, calling us to live in dependence upon God's grace and according to God's will;

  • that the Church welcomes all people without qualification as those for whom Christ died.
