URC member’s generous bequest

A member of a local United Reformed Church in Northamptonshire has left more than a million pounds to Christian Aid. Kathleen Ball, who died in 2006 at the age of 92, had been a member at Wellingborough church for many years and had supported Christian Aid since 1987.

In memory of her husband, Harold, she had paid for facilities for the disabled at Wellingborough church (pictured); she also helped to meet the cost of a new lifeboat at Cromer in Norfolk.

Minister at Wellingborough, the Revd Paul Bedford, said:

"Kath Ball and her husband Harold were generous and concerned members of this church.

"She was a loving disciple who expected high standards of herself and others; her sense of humour also shone through.

"She felt that if God loved the world enough to send his Son then we, today, had better shape up and be the best we can be."

Kath Ball started work at Weetabix at the age of 16 when it was known as the Britain and Africa Cereal Company and worked there until 1946. Her husband Harold, ran a cycle and electrical shop Wellingborough. He died in 1999, a few weeks short of his 100th birthday. The couple had no children.
