Church of Scotland Joins Voices For Peace in Washington DC (19/02/03)

This statement is not necessarily the latest issued by the Church of Scotland. Please refer to their website for up to date information.

On Wednesday 26 February, at Capitol Hill, Washington, The Reverend Alan McDonald, Convener of the Church of Scotland's Church and Nation Committee will represent UK Churches and join with religious leaders from the 5 permanent members of the UN Security Council when they brief members of Congress and others on their opposition to war with Iraq.

The briefing will offer members of Congress, Capitol Hill staff, the media, members of the religious community and the public the opportunity to hear religious leaders oppose war as a normal way of resolving conflicts.

The religious leaders will say that the UN inspections process should be given more time and pressure should be increased so that weapons of mass destruction are accounted for and destroyed. The religious leaders are of one mind and believe that we are in a global crisis that requires a global moral response.  The message that the leaders will give is not anti-American but is anti-war and highlights solidarity with the US churches, seeking to strengthen their opposition to war with Iraq.

Speaking today, Alan McDonald said ' At a critical time, this is a unique opportunity for the churches to speak a word of truth and peace to those at the heart of power in today's world.'
