URC on Jerusalem pilgrimage

The United Reformed Church’s deputy general secretary, the Revd Richard Mortimer, joined other church leaders to launch an online pilgrimage for Lent, organised by Christian Aid.

They met outside Westminster Abbey, under a sign pointing the way to Jerusalem, to publicise a unique virtual journey around the Holy Land, which transports travellers to the lands made familiar through scriptures and contemporary headlines.

Wearing hiking boots and rucksacks, leaders of the URC, the Methodist Church and the Congregational Federation joined Church of England bishops for the occasion.

The online pilgrimage gives people the chance to watch short videos, photo galleries, read stories and pray in the places where Jesus preached.  They meet local Christians, Jews and Muslims living there today, hearing their personal stories and how the conflict touches lives. They also learn how hard many people are working for peace.

Richard Mortimer (third from the left in the picture) said: “The Holy Land is treasured by three great world faiths. All three religions seek peace and the common good. The virtual pilgrimage can help us connect with the story of the Land in order to help that process.”
