Moderator gets on his bike

On Monday morning (19 July) the Revd Richard Church, moderator of the North Western Synod of the United Reformed Church, is setting off on a month long  cycle ride around the North West, visiting communities, churches and projects the length and breadth of the region.

Richard’s journey begins in Macclesfield and will finish in Barrow-in-Furness on Sunday 15 August.  Along the way he will be visiting a range of people, places and projects including the Carpenters Arms in Charlestown and Kirkham prison as well as popping in to a Teddy bear’s picnic in Stockport, which will raise funds for Francis House.  Mr Church will also share in ecumenical worship at Furness Abbey.  At various points on his journey he will be accompanied by keen cyclists from partner churches from several denominations, including the Methodists, Baptists and Anglicans.

Talking about the reasons for his trip, Richard says, “Often people describe the church as an out of touch and staid part of society - far removed from the dynamic movement Jesus started.  I’m hoping that my marathon ride, and the places I visit, will clearly show people that the Church is not stuck but is a vibrant and loving part of many communities throughout the North West, working for good and offering hope to people through the gospel.”

Richard concludes, “I’m really looking forward to my four week stint in the saddle, particularly the opportunities it will give me to participate in the lives of local communities and churches.”

Full details of the route can be found on the synod website at www.nwsynod.org.uk and, during the ride, Richard will be blogging and uploading photos direct onto the site.
