About this site and PLATO

PLATO was founded in 1988 by some of the people working in synods in the areas of administration, finance, property and trusts.  They felt that it would be useful in their work to share experiences with others in similar roles.  The idea caught on immediately and all the synods, and the central church, have representatives who correspond by e-mail and meet together twice a year to consider issues of common concern.   We had 'provinces' in the days when PLATO was formed, and so the acronym is a bit out of date.  It stands for Provincial Legal, Administrative and Trust Officers' association.

In recent years, PLATO has been aware that there is a great deal of duplication in effort in the production of Property Handbooks in each of the synods.  Although each synod has its own policies for finance and property, there is an increasing amount of legislation that affects the churches throughout the United Reformed Church.  It is information which relates mainly to such legislation which forms the content of this Property Handbook.  The guidance is intended for the use of local churches, although there may be some variants for churches in the Synods of Wales and Scotland.  Most synods have produced their own handbooks to complement this one with synod-specific information.
