Amazing Grace
(Music inspired from the motion picture) Sparrow Records
It is highly appropriate to complement the film release that inspires to stop
modern slavery through portraying its fundamental abolition story (and the
history behind one of the world’s best known hymns), with a musical collection
that puts a modern sound to original hymns. Overall these versions by well known
Christian artists are well produced, reflective and atmospheric. However this
mellow slant occasionally loses the simple motivational build that classically
played hymns have. Many of the hymns seem a little drawn out through slower
tempos, but interludes such as the added upbeat bridge in All Creatures, the
mandolin intro to Rock of Ages and touches such as McBride’s warm country vocals
to How Great Thou Art, lift the tracks in novel ways. This album may not appeal
to those who love the traditional aspects of hymns; however it is a pleasing and
enjoyable collection.

For God so Loved the World... (...a collection of songs reflecting the cross)
EMI CMG
This is a stylishly packaged collection of songs specifically for Easter,
complete with song words, Bible verses & extras. This collection has a
commercial sound, made up of contemporary Christian bands and songwriters.
Relatively unknown tracks are given voice as well as popular modern songs such
as Nothing but the Blood and Lost in Wonder. The style of the collection is a
little unbalanced; too many tracks share a similar over-produced rock boy-band
sound and not enough is made of female vocals. However in general this is still
a good selection of songs from skilful songwriters encompassing the subject of
the cross. It would appeal especially to young people or those who prefer modern
genres.
