Whilst we all
need a certain ‘pressure’ to motivate us, this can all too quickly
escalate into stress, breakdown or burn out; and somewhere along the
way, we lose the ability to see what is happening to us. We have to be
vigilant, therefore, and spot the symptoms early.
Shepherd likens the causes of stress to weights on a spring: if too many are
added, the spring is unable to snap back, to recover. We are aware of the
pitfalls of life changing situations, but she also looks at the expectations of
others, and the demands we make upon ourselves: our need to be perfect, to
please, to be active …our need, in effect, to win approval and love. With varied
biblical passages, she helps us to review our thinking in the light of God’s
perspective, and consider how we might change.
Nothing
especially new, then, but hopefully she raises our awareness
sufficiently, to prevent ‘useful’ stress from becoming life threatening.
