Risking
romance again – dating after divorce by the Revd David Robertson.
Pub friendsfirst, pp79, ISBN 0955216419, £7.99
A question in
mind before the cover was opened – would it address the need to deal
with past relationships before contemplating another? I need not have
worried. It is highlighted in the foreward and the author underpins it
at various points throughout Risking Romance Again.
The book is
easily read and offers questions for further thinking at the end of each
section. It may well be helpful to any divorced or separated person
whether ‘risking romance’ or not. There were clear resonances, a few
reminders and even an odd challenge to someone who has trod the path,
done the risking, learnt a lot and continues to journey.
In the
introduction there were some stated assumptions but I felt on occasions
there were other un-stated assumptions. For example there was an
assumption that church and church friends will be helpful. From
experience of working with others, sadly, this is not always the
reality.
I felt some
discomfort and did not find the metaphor of ‘terrorists’ in the ‘dealing
with the past’ section to be helpful. In the current climate of society
it distracted my concentration of the subject matter.
All in all
though, a helpful book which conveys that divorce is part of the past
and part of the ongoing journey. Books like this can be really helpful.
