Title: Thinking About Preaching

Price: £9.99
ISBN: 9780716206163
In contemporary society preaching has got a bad name. However, for most
Christians, preaching continues to build up and strengthen their faith
on a weekly basis. So the task of a preacher can be a daunting one.
Michael Townsend, a Methodist superintendent minister, brings 40 years
of experience to bear on the nature and task of preaching. In a
down-to-earth, thought provoking style, he guides the reader through
some of the challenges and pit-falls of preaching.
Starting with the “call” to preach, the reader is led to reflect upon
the way the preacher can approach scripture, the finding of a personal
voice and the place of tradition in preaching. In the final two
chapters, the reader’s attention is focused on the context in which
preaching takes place and the variety in styles of preaching.
This is a humble and balanced book. It does not attempt to resolve
long-held differences over the authority of the Bible. It simply offers
insight into how preachers have come to hold different beliefs about the
authority of the scripture and offers those learning to preach time in
which to form their own understanding.
At the same time, this is a practical book, full of wisdom, concerned
with how preachers integrate personal experience and tradition with
scripture. The author gives guidance on the use of personal stories,
urges caution where feelings might still be raw, and recognises the
invitational nature of testimony.
In his chapter on the preacher’s heritage, Townsend explores the way we
use tradition and history in preaching. He stirs preachers to reflect
upon the importance of remembering the past accurately, holding in
tension the mistakes of Church history alongside stories of heroes and
heroines of the faith.
I found this book thoughtful and engaging. The author’s experience shows
in his sensitive handling of complex issues and vast amounts of
practical wisdom. It should refresh experienced preachers and prepare
those beginning to preach for the joys and challenges of preaching.
