Eco-Mum - Sonia Christie
It seems my
husband hasn’t quite understood yet that with me leading my local
church’s eco-team, the whole family is now open to the scrutiny of the
congregation. This is why I moaned at him recently. The conversation
went like this:
Bruce:
(pulling a polythene wrapped packet of plastic cutlery out of his
pocket) Ah, that’s where it went, I couldn’t find it anywhere at lunch
time, I had to traipse down to the canteen and use an ordinary knife and
fork!
Sonia:
Have I taught you nothing? What were you thinking? Are you quite mad?
Bruce:
It’s just one little packet of plastic cutlery, what’s all the fuss
about?
Sonia:
I bet you use a fresh packet every day, and then chuck it in the bin
afterwards.
Bruce:
Yes, but…..
Sonia:
I can’t believe you would do this to me! Where is the harm in using
ordinary cutlery?
Bruce:
It’s such a nuisance! I have to wash it up afterwards and then take it
all the way back to the canteen. I’m too busy for all that hassle, it is
so much easier to use the plastic ones.
Sonia:
Have you thought about taking in ones from home? You could wash
them up afterwards and then slip them in to your brief case to use again
the next day?
Bruce:
Hassle!
(Ollie, my 9 year
old, lunges for the packet saying “Hey, can I use this in my packed
lunch bag?”)
Sonia:
No!
Bruce:
Sure!
Sonia:
(anxiously) Does anyone from church work at your office?
Of course there
are times when cynicism sets in and, shame aside; I can hardly blame him
for being apathetic. So often, gloomy news forecasts make me wonder if
my pitiful actions will really make any difference.
