A pilgrim’s journey -
Sheila Maxey
‘I thought
worrying about people was a sign of loving concern, but I am no longer
sure’
Once, during a
weekend conference I was attending, I found myself billeted on a retired
missionary with a tough approach to Christian spirituality. I arrived
tired after hours of debates and burdened with pastorate and family
worries. Perhaps foolishly, over a cup of coffee, I shared some of my
worries. Her response has stayed with me: “Worrying is a sin!”
I thought
worrying about people was a sign of loving concern, but as I have since
pondered her words I am no longer so sure. My worries can be a way of
manipulating or controlling my nearest and dearest, and of infecting
them with my fearful, anxious approach to life. My worries about the
state of the world can so easily lead to paralysis rather than positive
action.
