Climate chaos here and
now
It’s one
thing to worry about how climate change will affect your grandchildren,
another to have been forced to abandon your home to the surging sea
Washed off the map?
Some readers will
remember collecting ship half pennies to help support the church’s
mission work in the Pacific, particularly through the ministry of the
John Williams ships which plied the islands and atolls of the region.
For many the ships were a lifeline, connecting them to the outside
world.
Today a new
lifeline is called for, as climate change transforms the region, turning
the sea from a life-sustaining force full of rich bounty to an
overwhelming threat as increased and more violent storms coupled with
rising sea levels look set to wipe whole nations off the map.
