Facing up to the heat
Dr Paula
Clifford believes Christian thinking points to the need for urgent and
radical action against climate change
I was recently
challenged by a speaker from the floor at a crowded public debate on
climate change. “I came here tonight by bike not by car; I recycle
everything possible; I grow my own food; and I don’t even believe in
climate change. You have got everything out of proportion – you are
simply scaremongering.”
Quite apart from
his sceptical view of climate scientists, my questioner had an implicit
warning for us. Recycling, using a bicycle and so on are good things to
do. Arguably they make the world a better place, but they will not save
the planet.
If we kid
ourselves that they will, then I believe we are as guilty of climate
change denial as those who say the scientists have got it wrong.
