An estimated 31 million US and six million UK viewers watched the Michael Jackson Memorial. Some were transfixed; I was one of them. Why?

More of a Prince, Bob Dylan, Earth Wind and Fire and Rolling Stones fan, I was by no means a Jackson groupie. Yet I found myself shaken and wrapped up in the speeches, network time and non-stop news coverage – greater than for most heads of state. Many fans and detractors were asking the same question. Why the big deal?

We might compare Jackson’s “star quality” to the star quality of Jesus – obviously without for one moment wishing to compare the person of Jesus, the Christ to the troubled King of Pop.
